He said he went to look at a 2018 4Runner all black for about $38000. The only thing he really said he wanted was a little bit of offroad ability. I suggested an Outback, we were looking at a comparison and size-wise they are pretty close. The Outback has decent fuel economy at 28mpg, while the 4Runner is still in the 2000's with 18 mpg (probably because it is almost 1000 lbs heavier). When he heard that he was not happy although his commute is like 2 miles each way. A brand new Outback is also about $6k less than the used 4Runner. The biggest downside to the Outbacuse was the pathetic 170 something hp hampster wheel engine.

Enter the XT

we found an all-black new Outback XT for about the same price as the used 4 Runner, but with 260 hp and still 1000 pounds lighter. He liked. What else would you guys recomend?

A $1000 Allroad and a maintenance fund of $ 37k

Does it make more sense to buy a barley depreciated 4R over a new one? Least a 2020 would get you more modern features.

I’d also suggest a CPO Grand Cherokee, I really like how they drive over a 4R.

A five year old GX460?

A new F-150 or Ram?

A RAV4?

More info is needed than what he’s provided to you. $38k for a Subaru, which is guess is pretty average, just seems crazy.

I have told myself “I’d like some offroad ability” about 1,000 times but have always convinced myself that I’m a deluded idiot.

I suspect the $38k price tag doesn’t mean “I really want to learn technical rock crawling” so Outback is probably the better answer. Or almost any number of lifted hatcbacks, aka crossovers. There’s so much to choose from, it’s almost impossible.

I second this. I got a cpo diesel for about 5k less out the door with 15k miles.

$38k for an outback is top of the line though. Some of the others we looked at were around $30k

he didn’ t really say what he wanted in t he car just not a 10 year old leaking VW convertible , not an Accord which are what he and his wife drive now . I dont t hink he has any need/desire for a truck like a Ram . I thi nk it was just that he liked the 4Runner. I’m guessing that is what he will end up with cuz that i s what he likes and that i s how it seems to go despite the actual need for a lesser vehicle.

The beauty of this plan is that it will wreck his career, due to missing too many days of work.  Promotions for Opposaurusnoroad follow!

Check out Patriot Subaru in Attleboro for a price comparison. I can’t vouch for the pricing but they do have one of those lifetime warranties on most of the powertrain bits if you adhere to the maintenance schedule. I don’t think they need to do the service so you are not tied to that dealer but not sure if you can service it yourself. Full disclosure I know someone who works there and it seems legit.

Agreed. This is the right answer. Unless you are getting a homologation WRC car $38 seems  expensive.

Yes, the Grand Cherokee with the V8 came closest to the Outback that I bought in terms of temptation, but had a higher price and awful fuel economy.

From a style perspective; a Subaru Forester  XT from 2018 might make sense. It’s got a little more in common with the 4Runner from a looks perspective. More SUV like.

Attleboro is a bit of a haul f rom here.  I was looking at Planet Subaru just because they are the next town over but I told him if he got serious about buying a Subaru he should go to Quirk in Quincy.  Planet Subaru is full of a bunch of shit sucker douche bags who should go fuck tailpipes.  They wanted me, as an adult,  not a teen, to sign a sales agreement before I could take a USED WRX for a test drive.

That would have really soured me to the brand. I remember a while back wanting to test drive a Mazda 3 or equivalent at the time and they wouldn’t allow it. I wrote the HQ a letter and the apologize d on behalf of the dealer.  I ended up getting a Miata (Since sold) but it took a while for me to even recognize them as a brand.
